
Since the past one year, Amy Dorn Kopelan, executive director of COACHME, Inc., a nonprofit career-coaching program for women, conducted interviews with human resources and training directors at dozens of Fortune 500 companies to find out why women, as a group, don’t seem to advance in their careers at the same pace as men in similar positions.
Individual personality types could be one of the reasons and secondly they could not get the recognition from the corporate America because of which they are not able to exhibit more.
According to the hiring managers Kopelan spoke with, the actions hold the keys to women’s successful career development and achievement are:
1. Build successful relationships: in order to create a web of contact by attending seminars and professional meetings. These gatherings will help in raising visibility among peers.
2. Exert influence and convert others to your ideas: be confident on the topic you are working on, as your confidence will make other person bend on your view.
3. Take initiative: be the first one to take part in the high profile official project.
4. Manage difficult conversations: shed your shyness at home and try to go in for the most difficult conversations. This will help you in giving corporate appeal.
5. Promote yourself: make the right person know what you have accomplished.
6. Know how to ask for what you want: don’t ever feel hesitant in asking something you need or have earned.
7. Establish work/life harmony: try to maintain harmonious balance between your professional and home life.
So women, go ahead and show the world that we are not lagging behind and can effectively carry out our responsibilities.
