In order to put off provincial girls from turning to prostitution in the big city of Shenzhen and to frighten away the men who patronize the brothels, China came up with an idea, according to which, police officials in Southern China paraded nearly 100 women who were working as prostitutes in Shenzhen along with their johns.
Not only this, they used loudspeakers to read out their names and the misdeeds they were accused of committing. News photographers buzzed around them where as others lined up to take in the show.
However, the shot came as a hard blow to the Futian police as they were condemned for intruding privacy.
Kang Xiaoguang, a sociologist with the Rural Development Institute at the People’s University of China said,
‘Twenty years ago, this kind of parade would have been greeted with unanimous applause. But now it gets more criticism than support because more people realize their rights should be protected. And of course, they have more channels to voice their criticism, like the Internet’.
The All China Women’s Federation also expressed condemnation reckoning the parade an insult to the image of native women.
However, the government has made no official statement as such.
