Congo is unsafe for women, thanks to the burgeoning rape industry, sexual harassment and molestation. The crime rate against the women in the country has seen a surge, devouring their much-cherished freedom and sacrificing their zeal to live, taunting and traumatizing them. Liberty of women is under siege in Congo. What is the world doing? Waging wars and wars with no positive outcome.

As the war in Congo continues gripping the country, lakhs remain homeless, making their women vulnerable to the greedy eyes of the warlords, who leave no stone unturned to holding them hostage to their illicit demands. Described as the most battered place for women on earth, Congo remains a battleground, where warlords unleash terror, physically assault the poor women in front of their husbands, fathers, brothers and children, who remain hapless witnesses to the atrocities on their women. What can be a more dangerous place for a woman in the globe?
Even the UN has branded Congo as an insecure place for women of any age, thereby proclaiming that being a woman is a crime in the war between the Hutus and the Tutsis. Not only humiliation, but the lack of shelter, food, water and medicine is posing grave dangers to the war-affected people of Congo, every passing minute for who means misery for someone’s woman.

As far as I remember, there was no time when I heard of peace in Congo. First, the war and its victims, the genocide and slaughter used to rock headlines, but now, war has taken a new form and so have the war crimes. Culpable homicide or rape in my eyes stand at par. While the former kills, the latter murders a woman’s conscience.
The blossoming rape industry in Congo needs to be halted now, else no woman in Congo will ever boast of being its citizen. But, nothing alike war on terror will come to their rescue. Are the world leaders listening?
