Recent study has postulated that the rate of violence against women is higher in Arctic than in the rest of Canada.
But some social workers have pointed out that till some extent, society is responsible for it because in some parts, violence is considered as a part of family and is not talked about openly.
Although the frequency of sexual assault has been reduced comparatively but its rate is double in Yukon, three to six times higher in the Northwest Territories and seven to 14 times higher in Nunavut.
Napatchie McRae, head of a society that runs Nunavut’s only full-time women’s shelter is of the view that that poor housing, poverty and substance abuse are responsible for a situation.
She too has admitted the fact that many northerners have accepted violence as a part of their families.
