Recently some cases have come from rural China where more than a third of women have committed suicide as a consequence of domestic violence.

On 27th of November, the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) organised a news conference where, Xie Lihua chief editor of China Women News and secretary-general of Cultural Development Center for Rural Women revealed that there have been more than 200,000 suicides in china, including 157,000 women, most of them from rural areas.

She added, that though suicide is a forbidden in most parts of China yet women go in for that and also the rate of suicide is ten times higher than those who died of AIDS.

Xie
also revealed that out of 260 cases of suicides, 66% are related to domestic violence.

This insinuates the social set up of China where women are given secondary position with respect to men.

They don’t have a voice of their own. Women in the countryside are more likely to be abused by their husbands, and, when such abuses occur, they seldom get support from other family members and at large society. Besides, these women can easily get suicidal means, like pesticides.

According to All China Women’s Federation, domestic violence occurs among nearly 81 million Chinese couples, of which more than 90% of the victims are the wives.

As I have said earlier, Chinese women, victim of violence or epitome of frailty. A nation, which is moving ahead in today’s techno savvy world, is really lagging behind in their social set up... What a pity!
