According to the International Organization for Migration, Nigerian women are subjected to sex trafficking when offered jobs in Europe.
Jemini Pandya spokesperson of International Organization for Migration states that on arriving Europe a woman has to face mixture of violence and coercive religious rituals if she does not go according to the trafficker’s bidding.
Elaborating further, Pandya said that the rituals work directly on the psychology of the victim developing into a sense of fear. Moreover, they are not able to come out of it because of the shame that ‘it would actually bring to the communities at home’.
The report revealed that the major countries in Europe that deals with the trafficking of Nigerians are Britain and Italy followed by Netherlands, Spain, Germany, Belgium, Austria and France.
The most startling point given by Pandya is that the women group who, themselves, had been victims of trafficking handles all the trafficking regarding Nigerians.
The report described that presently, employing women from urban areas has becoming difficult for the traffickers because of the awareness, which the women have. Consequent upon which, they are looking forward to the rural regions.
