According to a report by the US Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS), the number of women in US prisons and jails has mounted to 57 percent since 1995.
It further revealed that the number of male prisoners has risen to 1.9 %, while the figure of imprisoned women has gone up 2.6 % in 1995.
The largest number of female prisoners has been reported in North Dakota with 18.2% increase since 1995, whereas New York has shown a downward graph by 2.5%.
In addition, black women are double in ratio while Hispanic women are more than three times likely to be incarcerated than the white women.
