In spite of occupying the three most powerful positions in the state, as the Governor, Chief Minister and State Assembly Speaker, Rajasthan ranks sixth in the country in the arena of atrocities against women. This has been revealed by a report presented by the National Crime Record Bureau. Further, there are increasing cases of rape, dowry, domestic violence and witch-hunting.

And the irony of the situation is that the Chairperson of National Commission for Women also hails from Rajasthan.

The reasons put forward by the women activists were:

1. the opening of large number of liquor shops in the state
2. the social structure of villages that is based on the hierarchy of caste system

Former Chairperson of Rajasthan Women Commission, Pawan Surana asserted that parents must teach their children about how to behave with girls and children. Also women must learn some defensive technique through sports in order to combat with these kinds of situations.

However, Ajay Jain, advocate, People’s Union for Civil Liberties has condemned the attitude of the administration towards violence against women.

Experts feel that these incidents shed light on the worsening condition of general administration.

However, according to the National Crime Records Bureau, the highest number of cases of atrocities on women has been found in Andhra Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh.
