wheel chairEven in the world of sports, women are not lagging behind the y- chromosome. However, there are some quarters where due recognition is not given to the deserving ladies.



Wheelchair racer Jean Driscoll, the eight-time champion of the Boston Marathon in the wheelchair division, has put this forward this ubiquitous idea. When people asked her about the obstacles faced by female athletes with disabilities, she talks about Sharon Hedrick.



Hedrick was a gold medalist in the inaugural wheelchair exhibition at the Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 1984. In doing so, Hedrick also broke the 800-meter women’s wheelchair race record by almost three seconds. However, she did not receive any kind of appreciation from the authorities or as Driscoll puts in ‘her picture did not made onto the Wheaties cereal box‘ instead it was the wheelchair racing pioneer George Murray because he was a man.



She further adds that she is not at all prejudice against Murray and appreciates his accomplishments but the question is of equality.



So I guess, equality can only result if due recognition is awarded to the deserving candidates.
