maryland_50Since some amount of discrimination exists in Orthodox communities between the genders, so the lawmakers are coming up with a proposal that would discourage this disparity.

Previously, women were not supposed to remarry without the consent of their divorced husband but the new legislature would make it illegal for women to be declared ‘agunah’ or a chained women.

Initially, the bill did not gain grounds but then supporters of the bill asserted that women too require equal footing in carrying out their life accordingly. In addition, a number of husbands manipulated the religious law in gaining the custody of their children and even money from their wife’s family.

If passed, the bill would require divorcing couples to file an affidavit stating that they had removed all religious barriers to remarriage within their power.
