Gender organizations in Mauritius have decided to come up with a campaign, which’ll run all the year round, in order to provide a safe and comfortable life for the women folk. Since, the gender laws are such that the girls are assaulted, sexually exploited and then put in jails for abortions and nothing is being done in this regard.

The condition of the hospitals is such that lately three women went unconscious after the abortion since an unprofessional person performed it. No action is taken against the doctors neither the men who sexually molest the girls BUT the girls are tagged as criminals. And are send to the courts and to the prison for further interrogation.

However, due to the persistent work of these gender organizations, the seedling of awareness is shooting up, though the process of development is a bit sluggish.

The present legislation is not projecting the society’s needs, making the Mauritian women stand on the lower altar in comparison with the African women.

During October, some twenty organizations met at Port Louis and discussed the abortion legislation, which at least meet South African standards where abortion is not a taboo and women’s life and health is protected.

The conference entitled ‘365 days of action to end gender violence’, was opened by, Indira Seebun, the Mauritian Minister of gender issues and Rama Valayden, the Minister of Justice. They expressed their support to end this human rights scourge but made no concrete promises.

However, gender activists are sure to see some positive results of their outcome by treating the violence victims as such rather than criminals.
